I. Life Breathes Through Trees

II. We are making the effort to save trees by encouraging people to use online banking as a way to preserve paper and not to use paper billing. We are planting trees to help restore the forest. We have conducted surveys to show a correlation between race, age, gender, and demographics with online banking. We are showing students and promoting their school to create special bins for paper recycling where the students and administrators deposit paper that would either way go to waste. These simple changes will help any school community not only to help recycling paper but make the school more Eco-friendly.

III.. Recycling is the key to the protection of our environment. We do not pay enough attention to the importance of recycling paper. Paper is used everyday, primarily at schools. The purpose of this project is to increase the knowledge of paper recycling and the damage we cause to the environment. Trees provide us an air conditioner so we can breathe. One tree inhales at least 26pounds of carbon dioxide from a single car. The same tree exhales oxygen for us to breathe. From 1 tree we found out that 12,500 sheets can be made. At least 95% of this paper will eventually be thrown away unrecycled. The problems with paper waste is that it can lead to deforestation, air pollution, and the materials used to make paper are non-renewable resources. When trees are cut, they are taking from our natural air purifiers which are trees because trees help to trap pollutants such as carbon monoxide and dust. Through a tree’s natural functions, our air is purer and oxygen is given away, but back to the paper waste problem paper waste is a huge problem that people seem to avoid paying much attention to, whether its because they are unaware, because of the simple fact that they don’t care, our communities must be informed about this tree crisis.

IV. My project’s initiative is to reduce the consuming amount of paper used on a daily basis. By using less paper and encouraging my community to alternately e-mail and reuse/recycle paper, we are working against deforestation and pollution, two vital factors of non-renewable products. My generation of technology has eased the lives of humanity. Using devices such as smart phones and computers allow us to rapidly communicate with the rest of the world. The uses of these technologies also do not require wasting materials such as paper. A more mature audience would have difficulties using computers or smart phones since they may not be familiar with the devices, although, their family may be able to assist the elderly with a reducing utilization of paper.

V. The project is crucial to humans very essence of existence. This project is a result of humans procrastination and doubtful beliefs of how endangered our surroundings and habitat has become. Hence, if we as teens do not begin to preserve our habitat, there may not be anything left for our future generations. The world is in severe derangement and the time has come for us, as a product of our environment, to preserve our habitat immediately. Doing so, increases the lifespan of many humans and species. However, while making the effort to preserve our habitat, there are forces also working against this crucial dilemma. According to an encyclopedia excerpt titled, “Habitat Destruction”, a few of these forces include: mining, logging, trawling, and urban sprawl. Habitat destruction is currently ranked as the most important cause of species extinction worldwide.

VI. In order to fulfill our project, we applied to a variety of resources including the census bureau, our community’s input, and various researched web pages with the necessary information to carry our mission. My group’s effort to consider statistics to find a correlation between the numbers of trees in the many cities of Los Angeles included making inquiries of the US census bureau and other city data to contain fine research. Along with statistics, we also have 200 surveys consisting of the citizens opinion based on online banking rather than paper billing. The surveys were taken from random people 18 and over including Middle College High staff and students, college students, parents, Church people, etc.
VII. Who were your allies? Who might your detractors or opponents be? How did you respond to their arguments against the change you’ve made or are proposing?

Our primary allies in our organization are tree people. “Tree people” is an organization that plants trees in communities that need them. We have currently been working with tree people for about a month now and we are convinced that they are dedicated to the conservation of our environment. Our opponents would be the people who destroy our environment by loitering, cutting down trees and not recycling. We technically have many opponents but we can make a difference by recycling and consuming less energy. If we counter argued to our opponents, we have sufficient evidence to prove our reasoning through the use of statistics and scientific information.

VIII. What legacy are you creating through this project for students who follow you in your school or for younger kids?

As a leadership team, we are trying to inform not only students in our school, but parents and adults about our specific project, but also place into perspective the importance of the habitat around them. At our school we are trying to influence students to take initiatives where they are active members in helping our habitat. We also want to set an example of leadership and also exemplify ways that every individual can help whether by recycling paper or planting a tree in their house. Furthermore, we also want to influence young kids. We have a series of presentations with junior high and elementary students where we will present our projects. We want to both inform students and persuade students to be more conscience of their environment. Our legacy will be one of conservation that we hope to spread not only to our school community, but to other students in other school communities.

IX. Our project can be sustained over-time by doing more research about the benefits of saving trees and other ways that can be helpful to do this. We can also try to persuade more people to save paper by recycling and doing online banking or getting all their statements by mail. These would help reduce the percentage number of deforestation around the world. We can also create many visuals (videos) involving us (the MCNC students) planting trees. In this manner, we can encourage people to help plant more trees in their communities. Our attempt to convince the public to use less paper and instead use electronic materials such as receiving mails online or paying their bills online is an efficient and effective way to keep our project sustained over time.
