The Consortium has developed, through conference workshops, coaching and other technical assistance services, a range of expertise valuable to both principals and to staff in their work preparing college ready and college successful students. Increasingly the Consortium sees numerous advantages in adding the delivery of a substantial part of this expertise to social networking tools.

The benefits of Digital Professional Development (ePD) are:

Time and Money Savings

  • Cost savings – Primarily in travel cost and time
  • Speed – Because no travel is involved and because a lot of work can be asynchronous (i.e. everyone does not have to be available at the same time), the pace of work can accelerate
  • Time flexibility – Information can be accessed when most convenient for a participant and engagement can be asynchronous
  • Leverage – Limited MCNC resources can reach large groups

A Better Process

  • Capture – All artifacts and documents, as well as all exchanges among participants and with experts, are recorded and available as qualitative data and as community knowledge
  • Reflection – A key aspect of learning is personal reflection, which the online medium can make both possible and integral
  • Expert access – Widening the circle online and giving access to views that are divergent and deeply experienced is more feasible both logistically and financially.

The Consortium’s Digital Professional Development has the common elements that the Consortium believes are essential to successful teaching and learning:

  • All ePD is NETWORKED; colleges are key network members in all work and cross-school links will be sought where possible to maximize reach, capitalize on commonalities and build shared culture.
  • All aspects of an ePD “program” are MONITORED; the community as a whole, and individual participants, will be supported and their individual and group work will be actively facilitated. This is the way that the Consortium manifests its accountability for participant and student outcomes.
  • Work in an ePD program is focused on student achievement outcomes ; goals will be determined by the community, with guidance from the community leader, and focused on outcomes for both staff and students.
  • Each ePD is EVALUATED in a formal way, to assess the impact on teaching and learning, and will be designed to LEAD TO ACTION
  • The Consortium’s macro goal for all of its ePD is to help each school and college partnership to develop their CULTURE and a shared process of “deepening the work;” thereby diminishing or changing the nature of their dependence on Consortium or other third party support.
